Mr. Kofi Annan
Secretary General
United Nations
New York City, N.Y.
Dear Mr. Secretary,
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t believe there was ever a “special mission” sent by the United Nations to investigate the atrocities leveled at the French when they were in Algeria. Was there one sent? And is the U.N. paying any attention to the wave of current attacks between rival factions slaughtering innocent civilians in Afghanistan? And I don’t recall seeing the results of the U.N.’s special mission to Angola where half a million people have died in the bitter battle for power that has raged since 1975. Doesn’t someone think a “special mission” is in order? Nor do I recall reading the results of the U.N.’s “special mission” to Iraq to investigate the murder of the Kurds by Saddam Hussain. Wasn’t a group sent? And what of the U.N.’s “special mission” to Chechniya to see if the Russians really massacred Chechyns as alleged. Show me their findings. And lest we forget, what of the U.N.’s “special mission” to India and Pakistan now that the Hindus and Muslims are intensifying their killing of one another. And didn’t I just read about Christians being murdered by Muslims in Indonesia? Is there a fact finding mission on its way?
Yet, you and all the other indignant members of the world governing body are in an uproar now that Israel has taken it upon itself to move against the terrorists you are reluctant to condemn because they are Arabs and not Jews. It seem that no matter how many thousands of people are murdered by other groups, only Israel receives the calumny of the General Assembly and a “special mission” must be sent to uncover what really happened in Jenin. This is hypocrisy writ in very large letters and anyone with any understanding sees through the bias. Long ago, the United Nations lost its credibility and most recently, so did you.
There are dozens of horrors currently playing themselves out in the world, but the U.N. expresses outrage only against Israel. How do you explain that?
The point I’m making is this. People all over the world attack one another, brutalize one another and murder one another and the U.N. looks on with indifference in all instances except where Israel is concerned. Tragically, civilians were killed in Afghanistan in a war on terrorism, and tragically, civilians were killed in Jenin in a war on terrorism. It is well known that terrorists use children and other civilians as shields. That’s what terrorists do. That’s why they’re called terrorists. Why are you afraid to be righteous?
Cordially,
Leonard H. Berman
