Dear Editor,
Jewish settlements are not the real issue impeding peace talks. Prior to 1967, there were no “settlements” anywhere, yet Arabs still refused to make peace with the Jewish state. What stops peace is Arab view that Israel cannot exist where the Caliphate is to be re-established.
In 1948, the Jordanian Arabs overran the eastern part of Jerusalem, as well as Judea and Samaria now called the West Bank. These areas were “ethnically cleansed” of its Jewish inhabitants through murder and expulsion because Arabs don’t want Jews in areas where Arabs intend to rule. Under Arab occupation, centuries of the Jewish presence in the form of synagogues, houses of study, etc. were methodically eradicated, and holy sites closed to Jews. Now, Palestinian Arabs continue to protest Israel’s having taken back and reestablishing their presence in what was originally part of the Jewish state. Where was the outcry when Jordan overran eastern Jerusalem in 1948 and expelled all the Jews? The world continues to hold Israel to a different standard!
Yours truly,
Leonard H. Berman
